Question: How much does it cost to get a patent?
Answer: It depends on the complexity and the technology. Simple innovation patents can range from $1,500-$3,000 plus official fee, and cost increases with increase in complexity of the technology. In essence, this cost includes various steps, such as, conducting patent search to determine patentability of the invention, drafting a patent application, filing patent with the patent office, handling patent prosecution by responding to patent office actions, recording grant of patent etc.
Question: How does one find out if their invention is eligible for patent protection?
Answer: Patent eligibility, or patentability of an invention implies that the invention must be useful, novel and non-obvious. Therefore, prior to drafting and filing a patent application, the patent attorneys determine if there are prior art disclosures or patents by conducting a prior art search.
Question: How long does it take to get a patent?
Answer: Generally, it takes 2-3 years from the date of filing of patent to complete the entire patent prosecution process. Depending upon the patent office backlog, the timeline may vary for inventions from different sectors, like, mobile and computer related applications.
