NIPPON STEEL CORPORATION GRANTED PATENT FOR SOLUTION FOR FORMING INSULATION COATING AND GRAIN -ORIENTED ELECTRICAL STEEL SHEET.

Nippon Steel Corporation manufactures steel products. The Company mainly produces and sells steel plates, steel pipes, structural steel, and more. Nippon Steel similarly provides chemicals, novel substances, and other commodities.

In India, the business of Nippon Steel Corporation focuses on Friction-joining structure, Fibrinogen receptor antagonist and pharmaceutical compositions comprising the same, Hearth Carriage Coupling Structure of Rotary Furnace Hearth, and Equipment for use in a molten metal plating bath.

Nippon Steel Corporation and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation filed a patent application numbered   4762/DELNP/2015 that is titled SOLUTION FOR FORMING INSULATION COATING AND GRAIN -ORIENTED ELECTRICAL STEEL SHEET. The patent has been filed in the field of Chemicals. This Patent Application has been granted as Patent Number 352201. This invention relates to a solution for forming an insulation coating of grain-oriented electrical steel sheet, the solution comprising an aqueous solution prepared by mixing a phosphate solution and colloidal silica, wherein silica particles of the colloidal silica are surface-modified by aluminate or a solution of the colloidal silica includes aluminate, and the aqueous solution is free of chromium.

During the patent examination, the Patent Examiner raised objections under Section 3(d) of the Patents Act, 1970 stating that the subject matter of the claims is directed to the mere discovery of a new form of the grain-oriented electrical steel sheet which does not result in the enhancement of its known efficacy.

As a response, the Applicant submitted that the claimed grain-oriented electrical steel sheet is novel. The claims are directed to sheets formed by insulation coating which does not include chromium. If the Cr(VI) compounds are simply omitted from the solution, many voids are formed in the formed insulation coating, and thereby the insulation coating having sufficient properties cannot be obtained. Insulation coatings of the present invention have porosities less than 10%. Insulation coatings imparted similar high tensions to the steel sheets in which chromic acid was used in the solution and also grain-oriented sheet has excellent magnetic properties due to a high tension imparted to a steel sheet as well as excellent electric insulation, thermal resistivity, chemical resistivity, and chemical safety. Therefore, the claims do not fall under the embargo of section 3(d) of the Act.
