Patent granted in India to INTEL CORPORATION

As per patent office journal dated 16/07/2021, patent number 371506 has been granted to INTEL CORPORATION that is titled RECONFIGURABLE SENSING PLATFORM FOR SOFTWARE-DEFINED INSTRUMENTATION. The primary independent claim of this patent states a logic block comprising a storage circuit to store hardware description information and a reconfigurable block including a plurality of circuits to perform logic functions based on code corresponding to a hardware description language (HDL). Further, the plurality of circuits to perform a first  configuration of the plurality of logic functions in accordance with an implementation of the HDL code based on the hardware description information corresponding to a first sensor. Further, the plurality of circuits perform a second configuration of the plurality of logic functions in accordance with another implementation of the HD code based on the changed hardware description information corresponding to a second sensor.

During the patent prosecution, the patent examiner objected to this patent under section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act. The patent applicant responded to this objection by stating that the claims have been amended to clarify that “the reconfigurable block” is “reconfigurable” in the sense that it is “the logic functions” performed by the circuits of the reconfigurable block that are re-configurable into different configurations, in accordance with different implementations of “HDL code based on the (different stored) hardware description information. Therefore, the subject matter is directed to improvement of the system based on the system architecture and is not mere scheme, mental act or computer program per se. Therefore, the claimed invention does not fall under the purview of section 3(k) of the patents Act.

This patent falls under the category of Computer Science. Overall, this patent covers a reconfigurable sensor  including a logic block having a storage circuit that stores hardware description information and a reconfigurable block including circuits. Furthermore, the circuits are to be set in a first configuration based on the hardware description information and in the second configuration once the hardware description information changes. The first hardware description information corresponds to a first sensor whereas the changed hardware description information corresponding to a second sensor.
