Patent granted in India to Amazon Technologies Inc.

As per patent office journal dated 18/06/2021, patent number 369046 has been granted to Amazon Technologies Inc that is titled as a technique for capturing data sets.

The primary independent claim of this patent states a method for capturing a representation of data sets that receives instructions from a client device to capture the representation of data sets and suspends the acknowledgement of completion of data operations. The data operations include manipulation of data sets distributed in partitions, each partition being operated by a server. The computer system instructs servers to capture corresponding portions of the data set, stored in partitions and other applications to resume acknowledgement of data operations.

During the patent prosecution, the patent examiner objected to this patent under section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act. The patent applicant responded to this objection by stating that the subject matter of the present invention solves the technical problem of ensuring that if a write is present in a captured data sets, then all writes confirmed before the submission of said write are also present in captured data sets, this would have been difficult to maintain, if the two writes in question had been going to different servers. Therefore, the present invention provides technical effect and is not merely an algorithm or computer program per se as contemplated in  section 3(k) of the Patents Act.

This patent falls under the category of computer science. Overall, this patent covers a method for capturing data sets after receiving instructions from a client device. A data set is represented by a logical volume, distributed in physical storage devices. Further, the client devices are instructed to block acknowledgement of data operations, specifically write operations. Subsequently, the servers are instructed to capture the corresponding portions of the data sets and the client devices are instructed to resume acknowledgement of data operations, in particular, the write operations.
