COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH GRANTED PATENT FOR AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE ISOLATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS USEFUL FOR THE TREATMENT OF CANCER.

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research SA offers commercial assistance and services. The Company provides scientific and technical investigation and expansion facilities. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research functions in South Africa.

In India, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research focuses on nitration of benzene, continuous micromixer, slurry phase organic-inorganic fused hybrid catalyst for residue hydroprocessing and process for preparation thereof, self-assembled catalysts and use thereof in olefin polymerization, apparatus, and method for separating whey proteins from whey using the same, and process for in vitro flowering in L.

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research filed a patent application numbered 8846/DELNP/2013 that is titled AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE ISOLATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS USEFUL FOR THE TREATMENT OF CANCER. The patent has been filed in the field of Pharmaceuticals. This Patent Application has been granted as Patent Number 352973. This invention relates to two main components, mahanine and mahanimbine (dihydroxy-mahanine) from Murraya koenigii for the treatment of glioblastoma and cervical carcinoma. Mahanimbine displayed anticancer actions against lymphoid leukemia, myeloid leukemia, glioma, cervical carcinoma, pancreatic, colon, and lung cancers in 19 cells of diverse genetic positions. C-3 hydroxy and NH categories are accountable in contributing groups for their cytotoxicity. Mahanine decreases the quantities of cisplatin and paclitaxel in cervical cancer indicating better efficacy and benefit as an adjunct chemotherapeutic agent to lessen the toxicity of these two drugs. A new cheap procedure for this research was proven.

During the Patent Examination, the Patent Examiner raised objections under Section 3(d) of the Patents (Amendment) Act, 2005. It was pointed out that the claimed process is considered to be mere use of known process as disclosed in cited prior art documents.

As a response, the Applicant submitted that the claimed process differs from the cited prior art where it dissolves the residue after methanol extraction in a solvent and 8 to 10% acid and separating the acid-soluble part from the mixture and making the remaining solution alkaline to obtain a precipitate.
