HUNTSMAN INTERNATIONAL LLC GRANTED PATENT FOR A PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYETHER POLYOLS.

Huntsman International LLC is a chemical manufacturing company that produces and commercializes specialty chemicals, commodity chemicals, polyurethanes, propylene oxides, surfactants, epoxy adhesives, aerospace compounds, and electrical insulating constituents. The company serves clients worldwide.

In India, the Polymer Technology of Huntsman International LLC focuses on Polyurethane filled tires, hydrocarbon blown polyurethane foam formulation giving desirable thermal insulation properties, Rigid polyurethane foam and system and method for making the same, and adhesives, reaction systems, and processes for the production of lignocellulosic composites.

Huntsman International LLC filed a patent application numbered 9290/DELNP/2014 that is titled as PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYETHER POLYOLS. The patent has been filed in the field of Polymer Technology. This Patent Application has been granted as Patent Number 34609. This invention provides a method to provide polyether polyols. It contains a crude polyether polyol mixture made up of polyether polyol and a base catalyst, mixed with an acid and water to neutralize the base catalyst. The method persists in steps wherein the first dehydration step, a part of the water is removed from the neutralized polyether polyol and in the second dehydration step another portion of the water is removed from the said second neutralized polyether polyol. Removing salt crystals from said second dehydrated neutralized polyether polyol, thereby providing the polyether polyol mixture.

During the patent examination, the patent examiner raised objections under Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents (Amendments) Act, 2005 stating that the claims of the present invention are not patentable in that it entails a simple usage of a previously known process.

As a response, the applicant humbly resisted the Ld. Controller’s objection against claims under Section 3(d) and submitted that the claims pertain to a novel method and not to the mere use of a known method.
