The Company possesses joint ventures in oil fields that are spread across Vietnam, Norway, Egypt, Tunisia, Iran, and Australia. The Group’s other undertakings entail deep-sea discoveries on the east and west coasts of India, and the investigation of coal bed methane.
In India, the Chemical business of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited focuses on the hydrogen production method by multi-step copper-chlorine thermochemical cycle.
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited filed a patent application numbered 201611011505 that is titled as PROCESS FOR CORROSION CONTROL OF CARBON STEEL TUBING AND CASING OF OIL AND GAS WELLS COMPOSITION. The patent has been filed in the field of Chemicals. This Patent Application has been granted as Patent Number 346477. This invention covers a process for corrosion control of carbon steel tubing and casing of oil and gas wells using corrosion inhibited completion fluid. The process includes the steps of adding a sodium bicarbonate based pH moderating agent in an amount of 1.5% to water, adding 63 ppm of a sodium sulfite based oxygen scavenger to the solution containing water and the pH moderating agent. Subsequently, a combination of salts is blended to the solution after the step of adding the oxygen scavenger, wherein this combination comprises calcium chloride, calcium bromide, and zinc bromide and adding 3% v/v dosing of an acid corrosion inhibitor (ACI) after the step of blending the combination of salts to obtain the corrosion inhibited completion fluid.
During the patent examination, the patent examiner raised objections under Section 3(e) of the Indian Patents Act 1970 stating that the claims are drawn to a corrosion inhibited completion fluid and a process of making it, which is a mere admixture of components that does not lead to any synergistic effect.
As a response, the Applicant submitted that the claimed invention, as recited in amended claims cannot be said to be a mere admixture and is a combination invention. Hence, the objection of 3(d) does not apply.
