Patent granted in India to CISCO TECHNOLOGY, INC

As per patent office journal dated 03/12/2021, patent number 382579 has been granted to CISCO TECHNOLOGY, INC which is titled CONNECTION DEVICE AUTHENTICATION”

 The primary independent claim of this patent states a connection device comprising a cable having first and second opposed ends; a first connector provided at the first end of the cable and a second connector provided at the second end of the cable. The cable provide communication between the first and the second connectors; and one authentication module, configured to receive power from an electronic device upon connection of the connection device to the electronic device. Thus, facilitating authentication of the connection device when connected to the electronic device and the one authentication module is configured to transition to a dormant state, in which power to the authentication module is disabled, after the authentication of the connection device wherein the connection device is configured to enable data transmission to or from the electronic device.

During the patent prosecution, the patent examiner objected to this patent under section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act. The patent applicant responded to this objection by stating that if the present invention provides a technical solution to a technical problem and has a technical effect then the same cannot be considered to fall under the category of algorithm or computer program per se. In the light of such observation, the applicant respectfully submits that the claimed subject matter advantageously enables authentication of a connection device with lower power requirements for the connection device after authentication. Moreover, the claims of the present invention have significant technical contribution over the prior art. Therefore, the claims of the present invention do not fall within the scope of Section 3(k) of the Act.

Overall, this patent covers a method and apparatus provided for a secure interconnect between data modules, including a security apparatus within a secured data connection device installed with a security chip. The connection device may be authenticated prior to enabling a stacking feature.
