As per patent office journal dated 23/07/2021, patent number 372121 has been granted to MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGY LICENSING, LLC that is titled MAINTAINING UNDO AND REDO CAPABILITY ACROSS METADATA MERGES.
The primary independent claim of this patent states a method for preservation of metadata during an undo operation at a client computer that includes modification of a first section and second section of a document on a word processing application on the client computer that includes performing user action in the first and second section of a document and receiving metadata. After the metadata for the first section of a document is modified and received, the metadata is inserted into the second section of a document and then an undo operation is performed on the word processing application. Further, the steps of undo operation include removing the metadata, at the client computer, for the second section of the document; undoing the last user action of the one or more user actions in the first section of the document; and restoring the metadata for the second section of the document.
During the patent prosecution, the patent examiner objected to this patent under section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act. The patent applicant responded to this objection by stating that as per the CRI Guidelines of June 2017, to pass the test of patentability under section 3(k), an invention should be judged from the substance of the claim as a whole and the technical advancement or technical effect also needs to be assessed. In particular, the claimed invention discloses techniques for preserving metadata during an undo operation at a client computer. Further, the claimed invention is directed to the practical application in the field of collaborative development of a document. Therefore, the claimed invention does not fall under the purview of section 3(k).
This patent falls under the category of Computer Science. Overall, this patent covers a method for preservation of metadata during an undo operation at a client computer that includes modification of a first section and second section of a document on a word processing application on the client computer that includes performing user action in the first and second section of a document and receiving metadata. After the metadata for the first section of a document is modified and received, the metadata is inserted into the second section of a document and then an undo operation is performed on the word processing application. Further the steps of undo operation include removing the metadata, at the client computer, for the second section of the document; undoing the last user action of the one or more user actions in the first section of the document; and restoring the metadata for the second section of the document.
