RESEARCH & DESIGN INSTITUTE OF UREA AND ORGANIC SYNTHESIS PRODUCTS (OAO NIIK) Received a Patent for TREATING WASTEWATER FROM MELAMINE PRODUCTION

The primary objective of Research & Design Institute of Urea and Organic Synthesis Products is to understand and meet the Customer’s  requirements when supplying engineering services. For this purpose, the company applies an effective Quality Management System in compliance with the requirements of the international Standard ISO 9001. Each department of the Company is directly responsible for the workmanlike performance of its duty and the quality characteristics. The system shall secure the continually improved effectiveness of the Company´s processes.

Otkrytoe Aktsionernoe Obschestvo Research & Design Institute of Urea and Organic Synthesis Products (OAO NIIK) filed patent application 201617016822 that is titled as METHOD FOR TREATING WASTEWATER FROM MELAMINE PRODUCTION. This Patent Application has been granted as Patent Number 317950.

The invention covers Chemical compound. This  invention relates to methods for treating wastewater formed during the production of melamine from urea using techniques which involve the use of aqueous solutions of alkali metal hydroxides for purifying and separating-out melamine. The invention can be used in the industrial production of melamine. A method for treating wastewater from melamine production involves two stages of thermal hydrolysis of the wastewater. The first stage involves the main thermal hydrolysis of the wastewater at a temperature of 180-270ºС until the decomposition of 95.0-99.9% of triazine derivatives contained in the wastewater, 20-80% of the wastewater processed during the first stage being recycled back into the process. The second stage involves the final thermal hydrolysis, at a temperature of 180-270ºС, of the remaining portion of the wastewater processed during the first stage. The technical result which can be obtained by using the invention consists in achieving a high level of treatment of wastewater which is discharged into the sewer system, decreasing the amount of treated wastewater discharged into the sewer system, and decreasing clean water consumption during the process while simultaneously simplifying the technique and decreasing energy consumption.

During patent examination, the patent examiner raised objections under Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents Act claims 1 appears to be a mere use of a known process which neither results in a known product nor employs any new reactant.

As a response to the said objection, the applicant submits present invention discloses a process for purifying wastewater formed during manufacturing of melamine produced from urea by two stage wastewater treatment along with employing different steps and reactants in comparison to the cited prior arts D1-D2. The first two distinctive features of the present invention characterize the proposed recycling process of the part of wastewater presented in the form of a partly hydrolyzed water as less energy consuming than the recycling of the part of wastewater in the form of treated condensate described in the prior art. The use of this recycle does not require additional treatment stage which makes the process more complicated.
